Web Designer Resume Tip #1:  Know the Job Requirements For A Web Designer

To write a great Web Designer resume, it’s good to remind ourselves of what the job actually does  Sometimes, it is easy to forget what our job really requires because we do it everyday.  By asking yourself what personality traits, knowledge, skills and abilities are needed to be a good Web Designer, you get yourself into the right frame of mind needed to write your Web Designer resume.

For example, when I write a Web Designer resume, this is what comes to mind for the type of work.

Web designers and developers create websites and intranet sites. They work for software development companies, information technology consulting firms both in  private and public sectors, or they may be self-employed.  Web designers need to be good listeners to get a sense of what the client wants to develop.  A good designer must have a strong technical and programming background balanced with artistic creative talent.  Often a web designer must manage the web project too, so strong project management skills are a bonus to ensure the project is completed on time and budget.

Web Designer Resume Tip #2:  Highlight Core Web Designer Competencies

Knowing the traits required for your Web Designer job, is important because a great Web Developer or Web Designer sample resume highlights the core competencies required of the job.  Core competencies are like the essential traits required to be successful for Web Designer jobs.  In other words, a good Web Designer sample resume should highlight traits like artistic and creative talent, analytical and problem solving ability, the ability to translate client wishes to a website and the ability manage one or more web projects.

Web Designer Resume Tip #3:  Focus on Your Accomplishments As a Web Designer

Let’s face it, employers want employees who can deliver results.  So in your Web Designer resume, mention career accomplishments that highlight the job competencies .  This means you need to give examples of where your creative talent, eye for aesthetics, project management skills helped you succeed.  For example how did these skills help your employer increase revenue, decrease cost, improve efficiency, service and so forth.  Mention awards, letters of appreciation, and recognition you earned as a Web Designer.

If your work as a Web Designer or Web Developer is not easily measured then use social evidence such as testimonials and references to demonstrate your accomplishments on your resume.  Also include a portfolio of some of the websites you have developed.  A quote from a former employer or links to website projects inserted in your resume can show any employer that you are the one to hire.

Web Designer Resume Tip #4:  Don’t Be A Needle In The Haystack

Most employers today use software programs to manage and search resumes.  Employers run job title queries in their resume database to find candidates with previous experience.  Because of this, the job title you list in your Web Designer resume can greatly impact resume searchability.  So make sure your Web Designer resume contains job titles that are commonly searched.  For more on how the job titles listed in your resume can affect your chances for landing your next job interview, check out our article “Don’t Get Pigeon Holed By Your Resume“.
