An optician helps patients with their selection of eye wear needs. An optician will help by selecting, ordering, and dispensing of eyeglasses and contact lenses. Their goal is to help the patient select glasses, sun glasses, or contact lenses to meet their optical needs in terms of comfort, fit, and style.  Opticians may work in a hospital, eye clinic or retail optical store setting.

Tell me about yourself. How would your coworkers describe you?

Ability to communicate with patients is a vital skill of a successful optician. Describe a situation when a patient or customer had difficulty understanding you. Perhaps you were trying to explain their prescription, or their eye care options, etc.

A great optician helps a patient or customer find the right eye wear based on their needs. How do you ensure you understand the patient’s needs, sense of style, and other criteria? How do you ensure you then help the patient choose the best option to suit their optical needs?

Successful opticians have a passion for patient care. How do you know you have provided great patient care? What do you do to ensure this level of care is delivered?

The ability to attend to details is important when an optician records sales, prepares billing, monitors and orders optical products. How do you ensure you attend to the details of your work? How do you make sure that the details are not left out?

Describe any optical experience, training, or education related to being an optician that would help you be successful in this position. For example, ABO or the American Board of Opticianry, NCLE or National Contact Lens Examiners Certification, degrees, diplomas in anatomy, physics, health, lab tech, understanding insurance claims, etc.

Pretend I am a patient and you need to explain the following terms to me: refraction, base curves, myopia and hyperopia

Opticians must analyze customer’s or patient’s prescription, interpret the ophthalmic disorder, and understand their needs. As such, interpretation and problem solving skills are vital to being a successful optician. Describe a situation where you analyzed a situation and identified a problem before anyone else did. How did you handle it?
