Tell me about yourself.

Describe your social work education including degrees, diplomas and certifications such as MSW, MA Counseling, BA Psych, BA Social Work, Counseling etc.

Sometimes clients don’t make decisions that the social worker agrees with. Tell me about a time when your client wanted to take a course of action that you did not agree with. What was the disagreement? Why did you disagree? How did you handle it?

Social work can be a very rewarding field but at the same time it can be stressful. How do you manage your work stress?

As a registered social worker, you must provide counseling and therapy to assist clients in developing skills to deal with and resolve their social and personal problems. How do you ensure that your counseling is effective?

This social worker position works with a interdisciplinary team of health care providers to develop a treatment plan for the client. While team work is essential, we don’t always get along with everyone we work with. Tell me about a situation when you had to work with someone perhaps another social worker, counselor, health care practitioner etc. that you didn’t get along with. How did you handle this?

Communication is a key skill for a social worker. Describe a situation when you had difficulty explaining a policy, issues or options to a client or their family. What did you do to help overcome this communication problem?

From time to time, you will be asked to make presentations to groups to educate them on counseling services and community issues. What was the most memorable presentation you had made? Why was it memorable?

Suppose your client a young teen confides that she has suicidal thoughts and sometimes contemplates suicide. It has taken you a long time to build the rapport with this client to the point where she is finally opening up about her feelings. She asks you to promise that you will not tell her parents or anyone else. How would you handle this? What are your considerations?

Suppose you are working in a hospital setting. Your client has a terminal condition and is in critical condition. The family is here to speak with you, your job is to explain a “do not resuscitate” order and discuss options of care. Role play this with me, I will play the part of the client’s son.

As a social worker, you will sometimes be handling a large case load. Tell me about a time when you had to juggle many simultaneous demands at work. How did you respond to this? What did you do to stay organized and prevent from being overwhelmed?
