Telephone Operator, Toll Operator, Directory Assistance Job Interview Question


Telephone operators help phone customers complete telephone calls. Today’s phone operators use a variety of computerized telephone systems to connect calls, perform traces, emergency assistance calls, locate phone listings ( directory assistance ), etc.

Telephone operators work in fast-paced environments and have restricted mobility since they are “tied” to their workstations via headset. Phone operators are employed by telephone companies such as Verizon, TELUS, Bell, Vodafone and so forth.

Telephone Operator Job Interview Question

Typing skills are needed to meet the performance standards for telephone operator job. What is your typing speed? When did you test your typing speed last? How do you use your typing skills in your current job? How often do you practice your typing?

Not only is typing skill vital to the telephone operator job, the ability to talk and type is crucial to this role. Describe your experience in talking while typing.

We require our telephone operators to hold a high school diploma or GED.  Are you able to meet this requirement?

Since the job requires a telephone operator to type call notes, etc into our systems, you will need a minimum of grade 12 English for spelling and grammar.  What grade did you acheive in English 12?  Are you willing to complete an English test to assess your spelling and grammar level?

Operator services is a 24/7 operation.  As such, a telephone operator must be available flexible in working holidays, weekends, evenings and/or nights.  Are you able to meet this requirement?

Sometimes callers can be angry, and even abusive. As such, our telephone operators are able to connect calls, relay information between callers, etc. in tense situations. Tell me about a time when you had to deal with an angry and irate customer.

Operator services is a fast-paced environment and can be stressful at times. What are some of the most stressful interactions you have had with customers and co-workers? Give me an example and tell me how you responded to it.

A phone operator who can speak another language such as French, Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, Russian, Korean, etc. is definitely an asset. What languages do you speak? What is your fluency level for each language?

We require our phone operators to be drug free and meet security requirements. Are you willing to complete a drug screen and a background check?
